Volleyball Gets a Pair of Wins Over Weekend

The Blue Knights volleyball team finished the weekend 2-2. The team started off strong on Friday with wins over Mesabi Range CC in 3 straight sets and a 4 set win agains Sub Region opponent, Gogebic CC. On Sunday, the team dropped the first match to Marshalltown CC in 3 sets, and went on to battle North Iowa Area CC, losing in 5 sets.

The Knights came out fired up and determined against Mesabi Range in the first match Friday evening. They were on fire and dominated the entire match. The tough serving by the Blue Knights kept Mesabi out of system the entire match and the amazing defensive effort had Mesabi hitting at a negative percentage for the match and in each set. The Knights ended the match with a .286 hitting percentage. The scores were 25-11, 25-19, 25-17.

Sam Carr, led the knights with 6 kills, 0 errors, for a hitting percentage of .667, and 3 blocks. Kim Stinnett, added 6 kills, after a long awaited return from injury. Sonje Odegard added 5 kills with a .500 hitting percentage.

The team then played Gogebic in the 2nd match of the evening and beat them in 4 sets. Sonje Odegard led the way with 13 kills, while Sam Carr added 11 kills and Destiny Cox added 10 kills. Chelsea Kiewel led both teams for the match, on defense, with 15 digs. The set scores were 25-23, 25-18, 25-27, 25-15.

On Sunday, the team traveled to North Iowa Area Community College for 2 more matches against Marshalltown CC and North Iowa Area CC.

The Blue Knights struggled against a strong Marshalltown team and lost in 3 sets. 

The next match was an all out battle with the NIACC trojans. 25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 22-25, 11-15. The Knights had lots of opportunities to pull ahead in the 4th set and end the match, but the trojans fought back and managed to take the match.

The middles for the Blue Knights were extremely effective. Sam Carr and Sonje Odegard each added 10 kills and 2 solo blocks with 1 assist block. Chelsea Kiewel led the team with 22 digs.

It was a really competitive weekend for the Blue Knights. The resume play Friday evening, with an away match against another Sub Region opponent, North Dakota State College of Science.
